Cotard's syndrome

Cotard's syndrome is a very serious and rare disease, which symptoms  are very characteristic and easy to notice. A person suffering from Cotard syndrome is convinced of his own death, that's why it's called a 'walking corpse syndrom'.

A characteristic symptom of Cotard's syndrome are delusions associated with patients' death in life. They are convinced that their internal organs putrefy , their bodies rots, and worms feed on them. Other symptoms include: anxiety, low sensitivity and an awareness of pain. Among the people affected by that disorder, there are also people who are convinced of their immortality. There is also an apathy and a lack of reaction to external stimuli such as taste, sound or smell. The sick person has very specific movements, which are similar to the movements of movie "zombie".

Another characteristic symptoms of Cotard's syndrome are patients' belief that some of their organs vanish in their bodies and that there is no blood in them. If someone ignores them or does not hear them, patients perceive it as an evidence of their non-existence.

A sick person may mutilate himself to convince others that he is dead, believing that his wounds will not bleed. He may even try to commit suicide to prove that he is dead. The sick person does not wash, eat or drink. Hunger and exhaustion are the second causes of patients' death

These symptoms are accompanied by severe anxiety and the feeling of guilt. The sick man looks for an explanation why he is still on earth, since he is already dead. Eventually, he concludes that his death is a penalty for his sins and disobedience and that he is a lost soul, forced to stay forever in a dead body.

    1. The patient should be under the constant care of a psychiatrist because of the risk of self-harm and suicide attempts. Treatment includes antipsychotic tablets and electroconvulsive therapy. If another disorder is the cause of the cotard syndrome, the underlying disease must be cured. The chances of a patient being cured depend on the stage of the disorder. It is very difficult.
