Billy Milligan- The most severe case of DID

The most severe case of dissociation identity disorder was William Stanley Milligan. Twenty-four personalities have been diagnosed in him. Doctors conducting the medical "investigation" found that Billy's problems were closely related to his childhood and to his stepfather Chalmer Milligan, who not only beat or buried the boy underground, but also raped him and sexually abused. It was the time, when David's personality appeared for the first time, helping him to deal with anxiety and pain. More personalities appeared over time.

The primary, original personality was 26-year-old William Stanley Milligan with blue eyes and brown hair, who was not able to graduate from high school. He constantly tried to commit suicide and was put to sleep by others. Next personality was 22-year-old Arthur. He had a dominant role, he decided which personality would be revealed and would take over consciousness. He was intelligent, unfazed, and spoke with British accent. He wore glasses. The third personality was Ragen Vadascovinich, 23 years old. He spoke English with a distinct Slavic accent. He could control the adrenaline flow in his own body, which made him extremely strong. His job was to protect other personalities as well as all women and children. He played a dominant role in dangerous places. He was colour-blind and he had long black hair, a mustache, and large hands. Fourth one was Allen, 18 years old, a fraud and manipulator. Thanks to his abilities, he spoke to outsiders most often of all personalities. He was the only one who smoked cigarettes and was the right hand man. The fifth was Tommy, often mistaken with Allen. He was specialised in escapes and electronics. He was often antisocial. He had amber brown eyes and a dark pale hair. The sixth personality was fourteen-year-old Danny, who was scared all the time. He was mainly afraid of men. He was forced by his stepfather to dig his own grave and he was buried alive in it, therefore he only painted still life. He had shoulder-length blonde hair and blue eyes. He was short and slim. The seventh personality was eight-year-old David. He was the keeper of pain. He absorbed all the suffering of other personalities. He was very sensitive and observant but confused most of the time. He was well built with blue eyes and reddish brown hair. Eighth was Christene. She was three years old. She could write and read in capital letters. She had a dyslexia. She liked drawings of butterflies and flowers. She had shoulder-length blonde hair. The ninth person was Christopher, 13 years old, Christene's brother. Adalana was tenth personality. She was shy and lonely introvert and homosexual, she cooked and wrote poetry. She had long, neglected black hair and brown eyes. The remaining 13 personalities were undesirable. They were suppressed by Arthur because of their negative qualities which put the rest of the personalities into serious trouble. The last twenty-fourth personality was a Teacher. He was the sum of all alter ego integrated into one personality.

William Stanley Milligan was the subject of a highly publicised court case in Ohio in the late 1970s. After committing several crimes, including armed robbery, he was arrested on the Ohio State University campus. It was during his preparation for the defence, when psychologists diagnosed Milligan with numerous personality disorders. His lawyers cited insanity, saying that two of his alternate personalities had committed crimes, and Milligan was unaware of this. He was the first person diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, who avoided the punishment for committed crimes. Instead he spent ten years in psychiatric hospitals.
